Michael Joseph Ryan is a skilled Irish trauma surgeon and epidemiologist specializing in infectious disease and public health.

Like too many humanitarian doctors who leant a hand in the Middle East, Dr. Ryan came away injured after the 2 August 1989 invasion of Kuwait and the subsequent 1990 American ouster of Saddam Hussein from his nefarious military wanderings into Kuwait.

I first noticed Mike Ryan, a fellow Irishman, rare in Iraq, while he was a medical instructor in 1989. He spells his name with the Hebrew spelling instead of the Gaelic e-before-a variant. How could one not notice him. He can’t spell. ;o) Dr. Ryan was at the Mosul University Medical College for some briefings.

That was a bad time to be a White Anglo-Saxon so close to extremist anti-West Saddam’s Ba’athist cult country just a little bit south in the large edgy Kirkuk region.

Standing for hours as a surgeon working on a case is hard on the back no matter how fancy the table is and how perfect its positioning.

Dr. Ryan’s career as a surgeon ended when in 1990 an Iraqi military convoy forced his vehicle off the highway and the crash seriously damaged two of Mike’s vertebrae. There was nothing anyone could do that anyone knows about.

Michael Ryan sought a career in Public Health. The good doctor has a Masters of Public Health from University College in Dublin. He later completed specialist training in communicable disease control, public health and infectious disease at the Health Protection Agency in London. He hasn’t stopped adding courses to his resume as he vigorously pursues what truly seems to be his calling, the EMS maestro of horrid outbreaks.

Ryan’s biography on the WHO website says, “Dr. Ryan first joined WHO in 1996, with the newly established unit to respond to emerging and epidemic disease threats.”

Today, since 2019, Dr. Ryan is executive director of the World Health Organization’s Health Emergencies Program, leading the team responsible for the international containment and treatment of COVID-19.

“I think he’s a very good man in that spot. He really loves this type of work and he does it well,” said Johan Giesecke, former chief scientist at the European Center for Disease Control.

The shy intellectual giant has garnered extraordinary experience fighting bacillary dysentery, cholera, Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever, Ebola, Marburg virus disease, measles, meningitis, relapsing fever, Rift Valley fever, SARS, Shigellosis, and now SARS-CoV-2.

Ryan is the single person responsible for fighting the novel coronavirus and lining up world leaders in the healthcare field to create a united front against the parasitic pathogen with the insatiable hunger for human cells to infect.
