Strain of the Unprecedented Yemen Cholera Outbreak Comes from Africa

Scientists seem to have unanimously agreed that they have discovered that the cholera strain causing the Yemen epidemic is related to a strain first seen in 2012 in South Asia. That’s good news because existing treatments work well on this strain, they say.  But the entire civil society community is underfunded and not reaching enough  patients.

The photo and its story: Nine countries from East Africa and the Middle East led by USA-backed Saudi Arabia attacked Yemen in March 2015. Here you see the Capital City of Sana’a on 11 May 2015 after being bombed.

The particular strain of V Cholera has spread globally, but the Yemeni strain did not arrive directly from South Asia or the Middle East. This particular cholera strain was circulating and causing outbreaks in Eastern Africa between 2013 and 2014, prior to appearing in Yemen in 2016. It likely came with South Sudan troops invading the country.

Aid Workers are having great difficulty in Yemen

The world food programme has reported that food is not reaching those who need it mostly because some Houthi leaders are involved in what may be wrongful activities of diverting aid.

Three significant factors are preventing Yemenis from benefiting from humanitarian’s remedial action.

  • Saudi, American and other combattants including the Houthis plus other Yemen groups are either preventing the flow of aid into the country or they are diverting food and medical supplies to blackmarket operations.
  • The warfighting has not stopped.
  • The relief effort is shamefully underfunded. Most of the weight of humanitarian action falls upon the UN which is drastically underfunded in all its functional units.

Malnourished elderly and infants are at risk of quick death upon contracting the disease which from all indications is relatively responsive to antibiotic treatment.

  • The World Food Program is reminding everyone that malnourished infants and children have compromised immune systems and are at least 3x more likely to die if they contract cholera which is sweeping across the country. You can avoid this disease by observing these sanitation, hygiene and food preparation methods. What Yemen Moms can do to save baby from Cholera.

What lies ahead is getting the drugs into the country and finding the people, the peace and the resources to treat the population with, in most cases, an oral medication.

The Yemen governorates reporting the highest number of suspected cases of cholera during 2019 are Amanat Al Asimah (52581), Sana’a (38792), Al Hudaydah (32698), Ibb (30201), Dhamar (28103) and Arman (26732).

Yemen War Began When Houthi Nationalists Ousted the American-Puppet Government claiming this was better for the population. Now they impede help when it is available.

There is no colour of right in the Yemen war except among the 29 million Yemeni, half of whom are now on death’s doorstep.

“The most despicable conduct of human beings is to be found in Yemen, says nurse and FPM.news writer Behar Abbasi who is presently in Sana’a.

In March 2015, Saudi Arabia, backed by The United States led a military Intervention into Yemen with a coalition of armed forces from nine countries in the Middle East and East Africa.

The USA, France and the UK sell to Saudi Arabia’s Mohammad Bin Salman Al Saud (MbS), as a frontman in the war, hundreds of billions of dollars in weapons, training and in the United States’ case, target acquisition, tracking and guidance and more.

Did Sudan’s 2016 outbreak induce an outbreak in Yemen? Probably. But that’s proof that it can be defeated, however it took Sudan until now. That’s too long for deprived Yemen. This is a fiasco.

As an enthusiastic member of the coalition invading Yemen since March 2015, 14,000 Sudanese militiamen have fought in Yemen over the past four years.

Of these 14,000 Sudanese men, some have earned the 14,000 a reputation of being rapists and plunderers.  The Yemen Press calls it a “a dark history of using rape as a weapon of war“.

Sudan entered the crusade against Yemen under the leadership of Omar al-Bashir, a twice indicted alleged war criminal and fugitive from justice.

In late 2015 Sudan was already experiencing an incipient epidemic of Cholera. By June of 2016 it was raging. By the start of spring 2018,  Juba declared the outbreak over.

In 2016, however, V. Cholera was breaking out in Yemen. Vibrio cholerae bacterium was detected toward the fall, months after it peaked in South Sudan.

FPM.news research indicates the path of the spreading bacteria to be Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan, prior to Yemen. At the same time, other strains were spreading around the world.

In the case of Yemen, treating the illness is not difficult once the patients have been discovered and are present to a medical response.

If there is cholera in your area, please read this treatment guide for your family. You can and will beat V Cholera if you follow these guidelines. It is imperative that you get medical help. See a medical practitioner as soon as possible.

What Yemen Moms can do to save baby from Cholera.

Professor Nick Thomson, from the Wellcome Sanger Institute and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: “Genomics enabled us to discover that the strain of cholera behind the devastating and ongoing epidemic in Yemen is likely linked to the migration of people from Eastern Africa into Yemen. Knowing how cholera moves globally gives us the opportunity to better prepare for future outbreaks. This information can help inform strategies for more targeted interventions with the ultimate aim of reducing the impact of future epidemics.”

Dr. François-Xavier Weill, Head of the Institut Pasteur’s Enteric Bacterial Pathogens Unit, said: “Genomic analysis continues to show its power to provide a high resolution, detailed view of the bacteria that causes cholera, Vibrio cholerae, which is critical to tackling this devastating disease. Like the other major cholera outbreaks around the world, we discovered that the atypical strain of bacteria behind the Yemeni cholera epidemic is linked to the single lineage called 7PET, which is responsible for the current and ongoing global pandemic. This potentially enables us to focus our research and direct interventions towards this particular lineage of Vibrio cholerae to greater effect.”
