Gosh, America. The world could help you if you would just listen.

As she said, “The world could help you if you would just listen,” it is worth mentioning that her brow was furrowed and her fist was pounding the desk as human rights defender and nurse Monique Deslauriers from Maine vented her frustration.

“America must listen to the world or start losing a million lives per year, or more, to COVID-19,” she exclaimed.

America should listen to its frontliners, like Monique, as well.

USA is Monique’s beloved country and from peaceful and beautiful Calais, Maine, America looks different than how most Americans see their nation.

“It may not be realistic,” she says, “but many kids here think of America as being sparsely settled wooded mountains with a beautiful pine smell in the early morning sun,” said Monique as she stared with wide eyes into her WebCam for the virtual interview. She is a pediatric specialist in 2020.

How can one not love the American frontliner?

“America is a place where science has been given every opportunity when profit was the motivator. Too bad it did not have a stronger philanthropic bent, because if it did, by now there would be a coronavirus vaccine from the SARS1 events of seventeen years ago,” she mused.

Percentage of deaths by US State

The states wherein these deaths are occurring and the pattern that will likely persist for some time is illustrated in this graph below by computer scientist Fred Harris who compiles a COVID-19 databank  for a Civil Society collaborative group.

How can the individual American stop this disaster?

  1. Wear a mask; wash hands frequently especially before and after touching anything.
  2. Social distancing two to three meters.
  3. Wash your hands, now, and often.
  4. Exercise and maintain control of all chronic illness.

How can government stop the disaster?

  1. Wear a mask.
  2. Provide an aggressive, test, treat, trace and isolate regime. It will be needed indefinitely.
  3. Educate the public accordingly.
  4. Bolster public health to increase urgent care capabilities for many years to come.

“If people saw the long-term effect for survivors of COVID-19, all ages, people would wear a mask,” says nurse Monique.

“COVID-19 creates death or chronic illness. Those are the options. Around the world over 11 million people will suffer long term effects of the disease, is what scientists are now predicting. Do not give this relentless virus another host. Wear a mask,” says nurse Monique to all the families she meets.

COVID-19 leaves patients with poorer functioning of their eyes, intestines, lungs, heart, pancreas and liver.  The effects according to studies of SARS1 since 17 years indicate that long term chronic illness is expected from COVID-19 illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

“What these [long-term] chronic issues ultimately look like  and how many patients ultimately experience them will have huge implications for patients, the doctors who treat them, and the health systems around them,” said Kimberly Powers, an epidemiologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who is developing models on the virus’s spread to inform public-health efforts.

Hong Kong’s hospital authority found about half of its earliest 20 survivors had lung function below the normal range even after two months, said Dr. Owen Tsang in a report. He is the medical director of the infectious disease center at Princess Margaret Hospital.

“Diffusing capacity of patients’ lungs which means how well oxygen and carbon dioxide transfers between the lungs and blood remained below healthy levels, long after their recovery,” Dr. Tsang observed.

Warning issued by Civil Society in January 2020 Warning to USA issued by Civil Society in January 2020

Self-Training and practice for wearing any mask is required. See the video below.

“Losing family and friends to an avoidable death from COVID-19 hurts badly. And watching the victims of COVID-19 try to recover months after they have tested negative having fought the virus and won is also painful, especially if you are the one who must take care fo that loved one,” says Michele Francis whose medical practice is in Venezuela.

  • Do not touch the front of the mask.
  • Learn how to place the mask on your face using only the straps.
  • Perform hand hygiene before and after touching anything.
  • Learn how to fit-test your mask.
  • Wash your hands.
  • Dry your hands in he air is best.
  • Staying safe at home is best.
  • Safe distancing is two to three meters at least. (The crap you hear about “6 feet” distancing is political nonsense. A cough propels a huge viral load three meters. Use your brain or lose it.)

“Self Training. Wear an N95 mask to avoid being the “One-In-Twenty“. This video applies to clean masks only. To reuse a mask, don’t touch the front. Spray lightly with 70% alcohol and do not rewear for a day at least. Store in Zip-lock bag. Do not touch the front of a used mask. Medical gloves are a good idea but learn how to use them and how to discard,” instructs nurse Monique.
