Thousands of Rohingya refugees crossed the border near Anzuman Para village, Palong Khali, Bangladesh.

An estimated 700,000 Rohingya sought safety in Bangladesh. They crossed by land into south-eastern Bangladesh through several points.

Many came from the Buthidaung region in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state. Some said they fled torching and killings. Others said they left in fear ahead of anticipated violence.

To reach Bangladesh, they walked for days, many carrying children. They waded through marshland before swimming across the Naf river that divides the two countries.

So be it. Journo awards. But Myanmar must be compelled to Free Kyaw Soe Oo & Wa Lone

It is only a small consolation that
Reuters imprisoned journalists Kyaw Soe Oo and Wa Lone (Myanmar) will share this year’s UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize, following a recommendation an international jury of media professionals.

Both laureates are serving prison sentences. At the time of their arrest in Yangon on 12 December 2017, they were working for the Reuters news agency, reporting on extreme human rights violations they witnessed in Myanmar’s state of Rakhine.

The $25,000 Prize is funded by the Guillermo Cano Isaza Foundation (Colombia), the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation (Finland), and The Namibia Media Trust.
