COVID-19 Hospitalizations in Canada are soaring



Approximately 3,000 hospital beds in Canada are filled with SARS-CoV-2 (BA.2.86 or XBB.1.5) infected patients suffering severe illness, or, in some cases recovering from same. It is time to wear a respirator mask when in the company of persons outside the home.

The massively mutated BA.2.86 lineage, has some 36 changes in key parameters of the SARS-CoV-2 virus compared with the XBB.1.5 variation which makes up the bulk of infections in the first six months of 2023. Neither causes more deaths than previous variants but the death rate is very high as compared to influenza—on average about 6x to 10x  worse around the world depending on the region and comorbidities due to environmental issues today.

A new study provides evidence of a mechanism by which climate change could have played a direct role in the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic.

Environmental issues include air pollution, and tainted water, habitat destruction and species’ failure to adapt to rapid change, are collectively a growing influence on public health and increasing the presence of pathogens believe many scientists. The evidence is strong. Even mold is becoming a problem for human upper respiratory systems and helping the spread of viruses, because airborne mold spores may contribute to overtaxing respiratory systems.

The climate crisis is beginning to have a substantial impact on public health. Some scientists have postulated that the zoonotic SARS-CoV-2 may have been promoted to the jump to humans because of changes among species due to global warming and the impact on habitats. For example, global greenhouse gas emissions over the last century have made southern China a hotspot for bat-borne coronaviruses, by driving growth of forest habitat favoured by bats.
