Taiwan is a matter of the right to external self-determination

Beijing went ballistic, literally, when a high ranking US Congress Delegation arrived in Taipei  on 2 August 2022 defying Beijing’s stop order. The Biden Democrat Congressional delegation led by Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, became the fly in the ointment that nearly started World War III.

The right of external self determination

The thinking at the Cornell Law School is that “external self-determination refers to full legal independence/secession for the given ‘people’ from the larger politico-legal state. … Self-determination denotes the legal right of people to decide their own destiny in the international order …  and Internal self-determination may refer to various political and social rights.”

There is a conundrum over the rights of peoples’ self-determination. Thus far in the 21st century governments rush to kill people who exercise their right to external self-determination.

“Do as we say but not as we do,” America tells China

That is exactly what America has been doing in Ukraine to the people of Donetsk and Luhansk, former provinces of the Donbass region, killing them—since May 2014.

But America does not want China to behave the way America does with respect to Taiwan which seeks the right of self-determination and a breakaway from China.

The conundrum of external self-determination applies to Kosovo (breaking away from Serbia), Abkhazia (breaking away from Georgia), Donetsk and Luhansk (breaking away from Ukraine), Quebec (breaking away from Canada) and Taiwan (breaking away from the People’s Republic of China), plus a few more.

On Sunday, USA Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Twitter that he “Spoke by phone this morning with incoming People’s Republic of China Foreign Minister Qin Gang as he departs Washington for his new role. We discussed US-PRC relationship and maintaining open lines of communication.”

Beijing appointed Qin, its ambassador to the United States, on Friday, Qin now becoming China’s foreign minister, the equivalent position to the US Secretary of State.

Qin will be the one to stick handle the Taiwan situation.
