11 February 2023 – Pentagon press secretary Air Force Brigadier General Pat Ryder spoke to reporters after the U.S. spent $millions to shoot down a possible $25 ‘high-altitude cylindrical object’ over Alaskan airspace on 10 February. “The object was [floating] at an altitude of [estimated] 40,000 feet and posed a reasonable threat to the safety of civilian flight [somewhat true in rare cases but with extremely low probability like being struck by a meteorite],” said National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby, who confirmed the news at Friday’s White House briefing. The incident comes after the U.S. shot down a Chinese scientific research balloon off the South Carolina coast after it transited across the country last week.
