In May 2023, the Kenyan Ministry of Environment with the Danish embassy, unveiled the secretariat and steering committee of the Africa Climate Summit leading into what will be “Africa Climate Week” to be held in Nairobi. Kenya. Video courtesy K24 is Kenya’s fastest growing TV station.

“What is Africa Climate Week?”

Organized by the U.N. and Kenya, parallel to ACS23, “Africa Climate Week as an event series will provide platforms for policymakers, practitioners, businesses and civil society to exchange on climate solutions, barriers to overcome and opportunities realized in different regions, leading to the first global stocktake concluding at COP28 in UAE in December of this year,” say Kenyan organizers.

According to the U.N. Secretary General, “the Africa Climate Week (ACW 2023) is one of four Regional Climate Weeks held this year to build momentum ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference COP 28 in Dubai and the conclusion of the first global stocktake, designed to chart the way for fulfilling the Paris Agreement’s key goals.”

Registration is here.

The Cabinet of the Kenyan President has set out goals as follows. “The inaugural Africa Climate Summit, championed by President William Kipchirchir Samoei Arap Ruto, aims to address the increasing exposure to climate change and its associated costs, both globally and particularly in Africa. With the expectation of escalating climate crises in terms of frequency and intensity, urgent action is required to mitigate these challenges. The Summit will serve as a platform to inform, frame, and influence commitments, pledges, and outcomes, ultimately leading to the development of the Nairobi Declaration.”

“This may be the most important leader assemblage in all of Africa’s history. Drop your all very unimportant guns and other war materials including arrest warrants for your political opponents, and get here to Nairobi, Kenya. Attend. Learn. You’ll like it,” says Katie Alsop, Executive Director, RINJ Women.

“Climate action is not a Global North issue or a Global South issue. It is our collective challenge, and it affects all of us. We need to come together to find common, global solutions,” said President of Kenya, William Samoei Ruto
