“Amidst weather woes, Canada is getting some great news: a COVID-19 pill and an incipient but sustained drop in the massive daily active Omicron cases. The bad news is that COVID-19 hospitalizations are colossal, worst ever,” notes Kathy Poon, an intern with the Civil Society Partners against COVID-19 tracking team in Singapore.

“A positive sign for Canada, daily active cases have been dropping. The numbers are still at a colossally high level however and the plunge needs to continue fast because hospitalizations are high and pushing resources to the limit,” says biostatistician Dr. Fred Harris of the Civil Society Partners against COVID-19  tracking team in Singapore.

PAXLOVID™ (nirmatrelvir and ritonavir) is now approved for use in Canada officially as of 17 January. “Maybe, Melissa, you should tell people with trypanophobia,” said the kindly doctor, “that these politicians are not talking about them, and that we in the medical profession have solutions for their problems, and in severe cases, it is called a ‘pill’,” he said with a smile.

China Investigators suspect bad hand hygiene infected a Beijing mail recipient.

A Canadian is suspected of bad hand hygiene, sending infected mail to a person in Beijing: an envelope allegedly contained traces of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. “The person became infected, likely from hand to mouth or nose,” say doctors.

A number of reports of trained dogs detecting the Omicron variant of the virus in some strange places after many days have circulated recently, indicated COVID-19 particles can remain active for a long time. The SARS2 detection capability of dogs has long been proven. Scientists have been experimenting with ‘canine detectives’ for Long COVID with accurate results.  (Screening for SARS-CoV-2 persistence in Long COVID patients using sniffer dogs and scents from axillary sweats samples.)

“The possibility of contracting the virus through foreign items cannot be ruled out,” the Beijing Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has said several times since the discovery.

“That is likely the case,” said  Dr. Nassima al Amouri, an Asian regional medical director for a global NGO. “It cannot be ruled out. Rigorous hand hygiene is a must is the lesson here. Look at Canadian case numbers—astronomical. The media doctors talk about hand hygiene but when the Beijing CDC suggests that somebody was not washing their hands properly, Canadians are one after another saying, ‘naw this could not happen’.  But it did happen. Some of my best professors have been Chinese. The Chinese are not stupid people and saying that active particles of the Omicron variant cannot survive a few days is maybe why North America has such tragic numbers of infections. Wash your hands and accept that active particles of the SARS-CoV-2 virus can be transmitted on objects from one hand to the other by the most unexpected means,” suggested the doctor, emphasizing hand hygiene as a preventative measure against contraction of virus illness.
