Philippines Maring Cyclone causing landslides and storm surges on Luzon Island

Expect landslides on mountain roads in the Philippines Island of Luzon (closest to Taiwan) say local officials when asked about road conditions shortly after midnight on 12 October (GMT+8) as Tropical cyclone Maring (Kompasu) lumbers across the northern part of Luzon Island dumping torrential rain into the mountainous regions making severe landslides likely, say officials.

“Power is out in the Baguio City, La Trinidad and Tuba areas for the third time in 24 hours,” say nurses at a women’s shelter between Baguio and Tuba.

Tropical cyclone Maring has been soaking the most northern island of the Philippines with heavy (‘Emergency Red‘ warning according to PAGASA officials in Manila)  since early Monday morning local time (Sunday afternoon New York time).

The RINJ Foundation operates a women’s shelter and health clinic on Luzon island and is offering assistance along the mountain highway known as Marcos Highway, a fairly treacherous route even in good weather, through the Cordillera Mountains to the Baguio City / La Trinidad / Tuba area of Luzon Island near the west Asian Sea coast in Benguet province.
