18,862 Filipinos apprehended for improper masks since 5 May

Philippines Interior Secretary Eduardo Ano in a radio interview on Tuesday told Filipinos that 18,862 Pinoys had been apprehended  by the Philippines National Police for not properly wearing their masks.

“We all know that the vaccines come in trickles. So we have to get the public to follow minimum public health standards before there’s another surge,” Ano said during the broadcast.

“Our only means of fighting COVID-19 while we still lack vaccines is observing minimum health standards, especially wearing face masks.”

On 5 May Philippines National  Police by presidential decree have been instructed to arrest any person violating curfew and not wearing a mask according to a statement issued by the Philippines Presidential Palace.

President Duterte told police to “get tough on rule breakers” and arrest those not wearing a mask properly, especially those who leave their nose exposed.

“My orders to the police are those who are not wearing their masks properly, arrest them and detain them, investigate why they are doing it,” Duterte said.

“It’s not for me, it’s not for us. It’s for the interest of the country so you won’t infect and you won’t be infected.”

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said this arrest process allowed police to detain perpetrators for 12 hours.
