Clearview AI app is a stalker delight as well as being a human rights violation says women shelter manager.

“You win a basket of fruit at your bowling alley and all of a sudden your picture on the bowling alley website has caused you to be summoned to a police line-up for an armed robbery,” exclaims Monique Deslauriers, a Calais, Maine nurse and US Executive Director for a global women’s rights group, when asked about Clearview AI, an internet ‘spyware’ application. It spies on everyone.

“Do you have any idea how many complaints against violent  cops we get for date-rape and spousal abuse on our women’s helpline,” she asked rhetorically.  “Google it!”

“A cop goes to work barking at people to do this or that and they all say,yes sir, three bags full sir‘,  and then he goes home to a wife with a baby in her belly, one in her arms and another tugging her apron strings while cooking his dinner and ironing his shirt at the same time and he demands she get his newspaper. She doesn’t jump to attention for him and do his bidding like everyone else does all day long, he gets angry and she gets a whack across the back of the head and a concussion, for the umpteenth time.”

“Next thing you know, she has her bags packed and leaves to a shelter and he has his police department with its stalking software tracking her down. Ask any women’s shelter how many problems they have with police officers,” she added.

This anecdote is extremely common say women’s crisis helpdesk workers.

Clearview AI is a new research tool produced by a company that commit serious indictable crimes in Canada and also has violated Canadians’ privacy rights.

The company claims its software “helped law enforcement track down hundreds of at-large criminals, including pedophiles, terrorists and sex traffickers. It is also used to help exonerate the innocent and identify the victims of crimes including child sex abuse and financial fraud.”

“What Clearview does, is mass surveillance and it is illegal,” federal privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien told reporters on Wednesday.

“It is an affront to individuals’ privacy rights and inflicts broad based harm on all members of society who find themselves continually in a police lineup [without just cause].”

Canada must continue to hold onto it’s fifth-in-the-world status for democratic competence. The USA is well behind its North American neighbour.

Daniel Therrien Demands that Clearview remove all Canadians from its database.

According to Therrien, “Clearview sells a facial recognition tool that allows law enforcement and commercial organizations to match photographs of unknown people against a massive databank of 3 billion images, scraped from the Internet. The vast majority of these people have never been, and will never be, implicated in any crime.”

“What Clearview does is mass surveillance and it is illegal. It is an affront to individuals’ privacy rights and inflicts broad-based harm on all members of society, who find themselves continually in a police lineup. This is completely unacceptable,” The Canadian Privacy Commissioner added.
